📖 Ingredients List

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3 teaspoons canola oil (or other neutral oil)
  • 2 teaspoons light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white miso paste (also known as Shiromiso, mellow miso, or sweet miso).
  • 1 tablespoon finely diced shallot
  • 1 small clove of minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon runny honey (swap for agave syrup to make this dressing vegan)
  • 2 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • Fresh coriander leaves/cilantro

See the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for full quantities and step-by-step directions on how to make Sesame Miso Dressing.

👩🏼‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Finely dice the shallot and mince the garlic. Place both into a jar or bowl with the rice vinegar and honey to allow it to pickle slightly.
  2. Measure in all the other ingredients except the fresh coriander.
  3. Shake or whisk the sesame miso dressing briskly to emulsify all the ingredients.
  4. Before serving, add the chopped coriander leaves and shake the sesame miso vinaigrette dressing again.

🌟 Top Tip

You can make this sesame miso dressing in advance, but I recommend adding the coriander leaves (cilantro) at the last minute for the best taste.

👩🏼‍🍳 Chef's Tips & Serving suggestions

This easy sesame miso salad dressing recipe works well with a salad of raw vegetables, such as red bell pepper, shredded cabbage, sugar snap peas, edamame beans, crunchy bean sprouts, and grated carrots. Top with chopped coriander, roasted cashew nuts, and/or some shredded cooked chicken.

❄️ Storage & Freezing

This dressing will keep for 2-3 days in the fridge. Keep it in an airtight container and avoid adding the fresh herbs til the last minute to avoid them going a bit soggy.

Don't freeze this dressing.

🥣 Equipment

I use a jar to make salad dressings. Shaking it up for maximum emulsification is so simple.

❓Recipe FAQ

What is miso made of?

Miso paste is made from fermented soybeans. It has a delicious, strong, and savory taste with umami undertones, which is why it elevates other dishes so well. You can use it in many ways, for example, by making a miso salad dressing recipe or mixing it into soups or mayonnaise.

What are the types of miso?

White miso, yellow miso, red miso, and brown miso. They range in taste with white miso being the mildest and brown being the strongest.

What flavors pair well with miso?

Honey, soy, and sesame all work well with miso. But it also tastes delicious with sweeter flavors like chocolate, and tropical fruits.
