With multi-room control, you can play music or other media on any combination of Google Nest or Home speakers and displays, Google Pixel Tablets, or Google streaming devices. This feature lets you play music on multiple devices or transfer media to a speaker group that you created.
Compatible devices include the following:
- Speakers: Nest Audio, Google Home, Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Mini (1st gen), Google Home Max
- Displays: Nest Hub, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max
- Nest Wifi point
- Streaming devices: Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast Audio, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer (4K)
- Google Pixel Tablet (Hub mode only)
Add a device to playback
From your Nest display
- On your Nest display, when media is playing, tap Cast on the active media card.
- Tap each device that you want to add. All selected devices will have a check .
From the Google Home app
With music or other media playing:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Favorites .
- On the mini-player, tap Cast .
- Tap each device that you want to add. All selected devices have a check .
- Any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network are displayed.
Remove a device from playback
From your Nest display
Note: You need to first play media on multiple devices before you can remove a device from playback.
- On your Nest display, tap Cast on the active media card.
- Tap the device you want to remove. Media will immediately stop playing on that device.
From the Google Home app
Note: You need to first play media on multiple devices before you can remove a device from playback.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Favorites .
- On the mini-player, tap Cast.
- Any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network are displayed.
- Tap the device that you want to remove. Audio immediately stops playing on that device.
Transfer media to speaker groups
You can create pre-set speaker groups to quickly play media to a group of devices. You can also select any combination of devices using the mini-player in the Google Home app.
From your Nest display
You can transfer your session at any time to a speaker group you've already created. Learn more about how to create a speaker group.
- On your Nest display, tap Cast on the active media card.
- Tap the speaker group you'd like to transfer to. Media will begin to play on that group of devices.
From the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Favorites .
- On the mini-player, tap Cast .
- Any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network are displayed.
- Tap the name of the speaker group or the name of each device that you want to add. All selected devices have a check .
Control volume of active devices
Note: For more information about how to control speakers and displays that are playing together, go to Create and manage speaker groups.
From your Nest display
- On your Nest display, tap Cast on the active media card.
- Adjust the volume of your devices. Note: Active devices will have a slider for volume control.
From the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Favorites .
- On the mini-player, tap Cast .
- Any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network are displayed.
- Tap the mini-player. Adjust the volume of any active device. Note: Active devices have a slider for volume control.
Using voice commands
Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then "Set volume to 5" or "Set volume to 40%".
