Gerald F. (Dit) Dittmer, Sr., of Hampstead, N.C., died at home with his family on Friday, August 31, 2001.
He was born in Huntingburg, Indiana, on September 22, 1925, the son of the late Joseph T. and Norma Lemond Dittmer, and was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Dittmer.
Mr. Dittmer was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1971.
He was a true patriot and horseman. He was past member of the Seagate Saddle Club, was a member of the U.S.C.G. Chief Petty Officer Assoc. and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-six years, Sylvia Hill Dittmer; four children, Linda Marett and husband Ray, Cecilia Dittmer Floyd and husband Ted, Gerald F. Dittmer Jr. and wife Sherry, all of Wilmington, and Joseph E. Dittmer of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Ray Marett III, Eric Tomosunas, Shelly McBride and Tamie Tomusunas; five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Sydney and Carly Marett, Emil and Zachary Tomosunas; two sisters, Evelyn Kuebler and Doris Smith of Huntingburg, Indiana; and a brother, Allen Dittmer of Wilmington.

Alan Howard Bede of Wilmington, NC, died Thursday, August 30, 2001, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.
He was born February 23, 1921, in Chicago, IL, son of the late Howard Herman and Majella Davis Bede, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret White Bede.
Mr. Bede attended Dartmouth and graduated from Northwestern University. He was a Supply Officer in the US Navy serving in the Pacific Campaign. Mr. Bede was an investment banker in Chicago and New York City prior to his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Conklin Bede of the home; four daughters, Deborah Bede of Bradford, NH, Cynthia Lee and husband Peter of St. Paul, MN, Courtney Lees and husband Gerard of Old Greenwich, CT, and Jennifer Konze and husband Bob of Henniker, NH; two stepsons, R. Jeffrey Follert and wife Karen of Malibu, CA, and Howard Follert and wife Frances Maloy of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren; and one sister, Barbara Bede Jarchow of Lake Forest, IL.

Mabel Brown Long of Wilmington, N.C., died Friday, August 31, 2001, in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.
She was born in Columbus County, N.C., on October 27, 1920, the daughter of the late Charles D. Brown and Susie Hunt Brown. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Long; and a granddaughter, Rhonda Long.
Mrs. Long was the owner and operator of Cape Fear Seafood in Wilmington for thirty years.
She is survived by her son, Ronnie D. Long and Jean Litchfield of Wilmington; three granddaughters, Cheri Bennett of Wilmington, N.C., Jerrie Long of Carolina Beach, and Jennie Toms of Goldsboro, N.C.; five great-grandchildren; and a very dear friend, Lola Larson of Wallace, N.C.

He was born August 31, 1965, in Danbury, CT, son of John Joseph Gessaroli and Anna Gassaldini Manone, both of CT.
Mr. Gessaroli was the owner of Refined Hardwood Flooring Company.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Melissa Simonelli Gessaroli of the home; two brothers, Joseph Gessaroli and Michael Gessaroli; and a sister, Mary Cole all of CT; several nieces and nephews; and special companions, Jake and Daisy.

Mary "Mae Mae" Perry of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., died Friday, August 31, 2001, at her residence.
She was born in Nashville, TN, on November 8, 1922, the daughter of the late James Marshall High and Lela Lucky High.
Mrs. Perry retired from the United States Postal service with twenty-three years of service and was very active in the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Hospital auxiliary. Mrs. Perry was a wonderfully humorous character, an avid bridge player, and a member of Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Hugh Hayes Perry Jr. of the home; her daughter, Elizabeth Perry of Wilmington; her son, Hugh Hayes Perry III and wife Mikki of Wrightsville Beach; two granddaughters, Brooks O’Neal Perry and Catherine Michelle Perry; a sister, Evelyn H. Wright of Madisonville, TN; and a brother, Dr. James M. High and wife Eloise L. High of Nashville, TN. She was preceded in death by brothers, Paul Winston High and Harvel High.

Woodrow Wilson Yow, of Wilmington, died Saturday, September 01, 2001, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Randolph County, N.C., December 1, 1916, the son of the late Amos and Cassie Langley Yow.
Mr. Yow was retired from the Wilmington Transit Authority after 23 years of service and then was the owner and operator of A&W Sports Center in Surf City, N.C.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Agnes Jones Yow of the home; three daughters, Towana Harts and husband C.H. of Wilmington, Frances Clarke and husband Larry of Richmond, VA, and Priscilla Harts and husband Jacky of Rocky Point, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Anne Odom; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Woodrow Amos Yow in 1990; and five brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2001, in Oakdale Cemetery by Rev. Michael Tutterrow.

Born in Porters Neck on December 4, 1921, he was a son of the late Louis A. and Nellie Kathleen Gornto Covil. Mr. Covil was a member of Acme Presbyterian Church, Riegelwood, N.C.
Survivors include his wife, Vernice Lewis Covil; three sons, Wayne Covil and wife Nancy of Wilmington, Kenneth Covil of Sandy Creek, N.C., Donald Covil and wife Cindy of Shallotte; two daughters, Jean C. MRS. MARJORIE LOUISE WEIR
Mrs. Marjorie Louise Weir, 85, of Wilmington, N.C., died Friday, August 31, 2001, at Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center, where she has received truly compassionate care for the last fourteen months.
Mrs. Weir was born on October 22, 1915, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a daughter of the late Ernest Clay and Katherine Kidd Fugitt. She was married on December 22, 1940, to Norman Lester Weir. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
A career Army officer, Major Weir’s postings allowed them to live in many different places including Japan and France. Mrs. Weir often took teaching jobs in these varied locations. When the Major retired they settled in San Antonio, Texas. There Mrs. Weir had a successful career as an executive for the Girl Scouts of America.
After her husband’s death, she moved to Wilmington to live with her sister, Yvonne Fugitt. She is predeceased by her siblings, Miss Fugitt, Dorothy Fugitt Troth and William Kidd Fugitt.
Survivors include four nieces; two grandnieces; two grandnephews; three great-grandnephews; one great-grandniece; and her beloved dog, Gidget.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2001, in the Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service Oleander Chapel by the Reverend Walter M. Dinkins and the Reverend Dr. Roger E. Horne. The interment will be in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, at a later date.

Mr. Carl Dunn of NC Highway 11, Rose Hill, North Carolina, departed this life into eternal rest on Friday, August 31, 2001, at Brian Center Nursing Home, Wallace, North Carolina.

KENNETH J. DeLUCA
Kenneth J. DeLuca passed away on August 22, 2001. Born September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY, Ken grew up on Long Island where he pursued his passion for baseball. A standout pitcher, voted Best High School baseball player on Long Island, Ken was both drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and given a scholarship to Clemson University. When arm injuries curtailed his baseball career, Ken returned to New York State, where he graduated from Hofstra University.
For the next twenty years, Ken worked for Sears & Roebuck, rising as high as store manager before retiring in 1984 to open his own business. He owned and operated the Market Basket and the Silver Tooth Pub, two very popular local establishments in Rochester, Vermont. In 2000, Ken and his wife, Gay, sold their businesses to retire to the golf-friendly climate of Wilmington, NC.
Ken is survived by Gay; four sons, Kevin, Scott, Jason and Joel; two grandsons, Michael and Silas; his sister, Ginny; and many loving friends.
Throughout his life, Ken remained interested in political and environmental issues. To honor Ken and his interests, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Ken’s name to the Nature Conservancy, any local environmental organization, or the American Cancer Society.
